Wenger admits defeat in Arsenal title challenge

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has stated that his side are out of the title race following their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, The Daily Mail reports.

The Gunners were beaten by a second half David Silva finish and are now 12 points behind Roberto Mancini’s side in the table. Arsenal had been resurgent of late, winning seven out of eight matches before the game, but now face an uphill battle if they want to win the title. Arsenal have suffered heavily from injuries and Wenger believes that a win would have closed the gap to six with the injured players returning after the Christmas period.

Wenger said: ‘Unfortunately, it’s a game we couldn’t afford to lose because it puts us too much (behind City). If we had won the game, it would have put us six points behind and with our full-backs coming back, we would have a better squad in the second half of the season. It will be difficult to close the gap on City, but we will try.’

Arsenal face Aston Villa on Wednesday night and will look to bounce back with a win against the struggling Villa. Robin van Persie is still looking for more goals and was denied by Joe Hart and the offside flag on Sunday.
