Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger dismissed QPR midfielder Joey Barton’s claims that the Gunners tried to sign him, The
Barton claimed he had a ‘couple of conversations’ with Wenger ahead of a move to Arsenal whilst he was at Newcastle. The Englishman moved to QPR this summer ahead of Arsenal according to Barton and faces the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium today. Wenger insists that he never spoke to Barton and never held an interest in the 29 year old. The Arsenal boss pointed at the clashes between Barton and Arsenal players as reasons why he would not sign the midfielder.
Wenger said: ‘I didn’t try to sign him, I don’t know why he says that. Certainly, it’s not linked to him directly, as I’ve never spoken to him directly. The agents always call you up and offer you players. What they report back to their players afterwards is something I don’t master. I cannot stop him from talking, I don’t want to come out on that because we had the incident at Newcastle last season’.
The QPR midfielder even tried to ridicule Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood for not knowing what was going on at his own club. Hill-Wood stated that the club were not interested in Barton and his claims have been reinforced by Wenger ahead of today’s game. Barton is expected to captain the West Londoners at the Emirates Stadium, as Arsenal look to reclaim fifth place following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Newcastle last night.
