Wenger explains Henry return decision

Arsene Wenger has insisted that he only brings special players back to Arsenal following the arrival of Thierry Henry, arsenal.com reports.

Arsenal confirmed the two month loan signing of Henry on Friday and the striker returns to the Emirates Stadium after this weekend. New York Red Bulls want Henry back in March and Arsenal have the Frenchman for crunch games such as the Champions League last 16 against AC Milan and Premier League fixtures with Tottenham and Manchester United.

Henry follows in the footsteps of defender Sol Campbell and goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who have returned to Arsenal in the past on short-term deals. Wenger admits that Henry will not be the player he was at Arsenal before his move to Barcelona, but his experience is vital. The Arsenal boss also admitted that Henry is an exceptional player and that is why Arsenal made the move.

Wenger said: ‘I never did it before. You must have noticed that I only do it on short term. I’ve done it with players who have a special attitude, special weight in the dressing room and I’ve done it at periods where experience can play a big part in the dressing room, from January in March.

‘Before I did it with a very young side and you can feel that when it comes to March, they get a bit nervous. Players who have won before can help keep them calm. Now I do it for footballing reasons, because I need a striker for two months’, Wenger added.
