Arsene Wenger has hailed the spirit of his Arsenal players after their recovery from a poor start to the season, London
The Gunners have fired themselves back up the table to put themselves level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea. Many had tipped Arsenal to be out of the race for the Champions League following their disastrous start, but the Gunners have fired back at their critics superbly. Their 2-1 win against Aston Villa last night is their eighth win in ten league games.
Wenger had some Arsenal fans calling for him to exit after their 8-2 defeat to Manchester United, but the Frenchman has got the fans back on-side thanks to some astute summer transfers and the captaincy of Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman scored his 34th goal in 2011 from the penalty spot at Villa Park last night.
The Arsenal boss said: ‘Our spirit is exceptional and that’s why we came from a bad start to the season to such a strong run. You could see that some legs were jaded at Villa from Sunday and some minds as well in the speed of the decision-making. But we kept going and there is an exceptional attitude and spirit in the side. Very unusually for us, we scored from two set-pieces. That is basically historical for us’.
