Wenger made Hart approach

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he once tried to sign Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, arsenal.com reports.

Wenger has struggled to solve the goalkeeping issue left by David Seaman and has seen the erratic Jens Lehmann, inconsistent Manuel Almunia and error-prone Lukasz Fabianski try and fill the void. The Arsenal boss may have found his goalkeeper in Wojciech Szczesny, but Hart has made himself one of the best European goalkeepers with some outstanding performances for Manchester City.

The England international joined City from Shrewsbury Town back in 2006 when he was just 19 and spent time on loan at Birmingham City in 2009/2010. Wenger enquired over his services during that loan spell with the Blues and has spoken of how impressed he is with Hart’s goalkeeping. Arsenal travel to City this weekend looking to inflict a second league defeat of the season on Roberto Mancini’s men, but will have to beat the always impressive Hart.

Wenger said: ‘I remember when Hart played at Birmingham. I asked about him and they told me he is at Man City. I thought he would be the keeper there. He has something that is needed for a goalkeeper to play at a big club and I am not surprised he made it as no. 1’.
