Wilshere in trouble with UEFA after Frimpong bet tweet

Jack Wilshere has denied making bets on Arsenal during their 3-1 defeat to Olympiacos on Tuesday night, The Daily Mail reports.

Wilshere used his Twitter account to express his opinions on the odds of Emmanuel Frimpong scoring first in Athens and stated that the 150-1 odds would be ‘worth a cheeky £10 right’. The England midfielder, who is currently out injured with an ankle problem, could be in trouble with UEFA, who prohibit a player betting on his own team.

European football’s governing body are expected to probe the incident and Wilshere could face a fine or a ban if he is found guilty. The tweets have subsequently been deleted from the 19 year old’s account and Wilshere moved quickly to defend himself, insisting he was just joking.

A spokesman for UEFA said: ‘A breach of these principles is committed by anyone who participates directly or indirectly in betting or who has a financial interest in such activities.’
