Wolfsburg will return Hleb to Barcelona in January

According to Wolfsburg’s official website Alexander Hleb, on loan at the German club from Barcelona until the end of the year with an option to buy, will return to the Camp Nou in the winter transfer market.

The Belarusian midfielder, who has a contract with the Catalans until June, 2012, has confirmed he will be returning to Spain, where he hopes to sort out his future directly with Barcelona. Hleb underwent knee surgery last May and has struggled for fitness at the Volkswagen Arena, making just one start this season, and Wolfsburg boss Felix Magath has decided to pass up the opportunity to keep him until the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

Hleb joined Barcelona in August, 2008 in a €17million deal from Arsenal but made just 19 appearances and has been loaned out for the past two seasons to VFB Stuttgart, Birmingham City and Wolfsburg, with Barca continuing to pay his salary of €4m-a-year. The 30-year-old does not figure in Pep Guardiola’s plans and will be keen to find himself a new club before the end of January, possibly involving another loan arrangement.
