The Spanish-born midfielder, despite some impressive performances in England, has failed to represent Spain at a senior level. Whilst at Everton, Arteta’s form prompted rumour that England manager Fabio Capello had touted him to play for the national side. The Arsenal man said he considered an England call-up, but the decision was taken out of his hands by FIFA rules.
Arteta has been in sparkling form for Arsenal since his summer move, but there are still no signs of a call-up from Spain manager Vicente del Bosque. The 29 year old is not expected to be in the squad as Spain look to defender their European Championship crown this summer.
‘If it was any other country, I would have to say no, but because it was that one, I said I would have to think about it. England has been really good professionally and personally. In the end, I didn’t have to make a decision because I wasn’t allowed to play because of FIFA rules. I feel English in some ways, because I have spent the biggest part of my career here’, Arteta said.
