Chelsea players hold Anelka exit lunch after Villas-Boas snub

Chelsea players furious at the club’s snubbing of striker Nicolas Anelka from the Christmas party took the Frenchman out for a meal to defy the club, according to The Daily Mail.

The French striker left the club yesterday to join Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua after handing a transfer request at Chelsea. Anelka was unhappy with his lack of opportunities under new Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas and the Portuguese manager accepted the request. Villas-Boas also stopped Anelka training with the first team and made him park his car in the community car park, as well as getting changed in the academy facilities.

Anelka was also snubbed from the Christmas silver service lunch held at the club’s Cobham training ground, which some of the players did not appreciate. The Chelsea players took Anelka to China Tang at the Dorchester Hotel to make up for what Villas-Boas had done. Villas-Boas has been accused of not having the dressing room at times this season and this latest incident could indicate that revolt is rife at Stamford Bridge. Anelka spent five years at the club and was a key member of the double winning campaign in 2010.

The new Shanghai forward is upset at the way he has been treated, especially after giving his all to the club since his move from Bolton. A source close to the club said: ‘The lads thought banning Nico from the lunch was petty and spiteful. AVB has lost the dressing room and it’s become so bad several players want to get away now’.
