Ferguson hails the quality of Van Persie

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he is a huge admirer of Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie and has been impressed with his development, The Daily Star reports. United travel to the Emirates Stadium this afternoon for a huge clash in the title race.

Van Persie has been in electrifying form for the last year and currently has 18 goals in the league this season. The Gunners captain will pose the main threat to United’s goal this afternoon and Van Persie is eager to put right the horrendous 8-2 loss at Old Trafford. Ferguson revealed that he could have made an offer for the Dutchman, when he was with Feyernoord, but believed that his talent was not as good at the time. Arsenal nipped in and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has curbed the wild streak in the 27 year old, turning him into a feared forward.

Arsenal have yet to commit their captain to a new deal and with 18 months left on his current contract, Van Persie has said he will wait until the summer before negotiating. Ferguson could be interested in Van Persie and has spoken out of the threat the Arsenal forward poses, insisting his side must halt the Dutchman.

Ferguson said: ‘He’s scored 18 in the league so far and his form is fantastic. Top teams usually have a player like that and we hope Van Persie doesn’t add to his goal tally on Sunday. I remember us going to see Van Persie in the reserve team at Feyenoord way back – and we didn’t move for him.’
