Gerrard calls for Liverpool calm ahead of Man Utd clash

Ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Manchester United, Liverpool captain has called for calm amongst the fans as the bitter rivals meet in controversial circumstances following the last meeting in November. As a result of that game Liverpool’s Uruguayan forward was handed an eight match ban for racist comments made to Patrice Evra.

Suarez remains suspended for their meeting tomorrow, and after Sir Alex Ferguson refused the offer of peace talks between the two clubs their relationship is as bitter as ever. However Gerrard has pleaded for the match to be about the football and nothing else: “We all have a responsibility to ensure this game is remembered for the football.”

Gerrard recognises the rivalry between Manchester United and his boyhood club but remains focused on securing a Liverpool win: “It would be fantastic if, after the weekend, it is remembered for being a top game and obviously, from our point of view, a Liverpool win.”
