Gerrard signs new long term Liverpool contract

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has put pen to paper on a new deal that will effectively keep him at Anfield for the remainder of his career.

As part of the contract Gerrard will take up an ambassadorial role at the club when he retires from the game. Gerrard said of the deal: “I’m very happy. It’s a very proud day for myself and my family.”

After a long struggle with injury had hampered the England International’s start to the season, he has returned with three goals in four games including Wednesday’s winner at Manchester City in the Carling Cup. Gerrard told BBC Sport: “The contract extension coming the day after has been the icing on the cake. It has been a perfect 24 hours.”

Liverpool’s talisman has now chalked up 566 appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 144 goals in the process and has already cemented his status forever as a Liverpool great.
