Henry doing extra training in bid for starting spot against Swansea

Thierry Henry is undergoing extra training so that he can build on his sharpness and stamina for the remainder of his loan spell with Arsenal, arsenal.com reports.

Arsenal’s record goalscorer made a sensational return to action in the second half against Championship side Leeds United on Monday night, scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup tie. The Frenchman admits that he is not ready to complete a full 90 minutes and is working on improving his attributes, so that Gunners fans can see him in full glory. Henry will be an Arsenal player until mid-February, when his loan spell expires and he returns to MLS side New York Red Bulls.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s trip to the Liberty Stadium to face Swansea, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger revealed that the forward is doing all he can to get himself into contention. Wenger is expected to place Henry on the bench once again and deploy him in the same sort of impact substitute role he had to devastating effect in the FA Cup.

Wenger said: ‘Thierry works very hard, is doing extra sessions and is highly motivated. He wants to help out, so he makes extra sessions to try and get back to his full fitness. He is not there yet, but he is not far from the level he was at when he left here. He is fit enough to start a game, but not fit enough to last or play the whole thing. That’s what I have to decide. He’s in the squad for Sunday’.
