Jones calls for Man Utd fighting spirit

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has called for his teammates to show the winning mentality synonymous with the club, ESPN Soccernet reports.

The England international was part of the United side that lost 3-2 to relegation strugglers Blackburn at Old Trafford on New Year’s Eve. United are now three points behind Manchester City at the top of the table after Roberto Mancini’s side won against Liverpool last night. The Red Devils travel to Newcastle on Wednesday night looking to close the gap back to level points with a win.

United face City on Sunday in the third round of the FA Cup and will be hopeful of a win at the Sports Direct Arena to give them a confidence boost. Jones is expected to keep his place against Newcastle and is looking for his side to regain their form before the Blackburn game. United had scored 16 goals in four games before Blackburn and were on a win streak, but Jones’ former side shocked the Premier League with the win.

Jones said: ‘We just have to get on with it. It’s about how we manage and cope with injuries. We’ve been a bit unfortunate, but are still up there fighting with the best. I am excited and I’m loving it. When the chips are down, you see who the real fighters are. When we kick off every week, we have 11 people fighting on that pitch to win a match. That is the beauty of Manchester United’.
