Just a matter of patience says Defoe as Tottenham overcome West Brom

Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe believes that patience was the key to breaking down West Bromwich Albion last night, Tottenhamhotspur.com reports.

The England international, sporting a rather unusual bleach blonde haircut, scored a smartly-taken goal to give Spurs a 1-0 win over the Baggies at White Hart Lane. Spurs faced resolute defending against West Brom, but Defoe was able to break the deadlock just after the hour mark. Tottenham also suffered with injury worries in the game, losing midfielder Sandro and defender William Gallas to a cut lip.

Defoe said: ‘Three points were vital. It was a tough game, in the first half West Brom didn’t really attack, they sat in and made it difficult. It was important to be patient. We had it a lot last year when teams came here and we dropped a lot of points. But with the winning mentality we’ve got now, we knew we’d win the game. It was just a matter of time before we got the goal and I was delighted to see it go in. You’ve just got to be patient and keep creating chances’.

Spurs face a relatively easy home tie with Cheltenham Town at White Hart Lane and Defoe’s goal could have him pushing for a start in the FA Cup. The England international has been limited with his first-team chances through the form of Rafael van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor.
