Liverpool have approached Dutch side FC Groningen over forward David Texeira and have begun negotiations to try and sign the striker before the end of the window, Metro
Reds boss Kenny Dalglish has made signing a forward his priority following the eight-game ban handed to Luis Suarez and the indifferent form of Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt. Earlier targets such as Valencia’s Roberto Soldado and Aston Villa’s Darren Bent have been dismissed and now Dalglish is looking to the 20 year old Groningen prospect. The Uruguayan is performing well in the Eredivisie and has attracted the attention of a host of European sides, but Liverpool are expected to be heading the queue.
Texeira is valued at £8m by the Dutch side, but with a clause in the 20 year old’s contract stating that 20% of the fee must go to former club Defensor Sporting, Liverpool may have to pay £10m. Director of football at Anfield, Damien Comolli, is looking to sweeten the deal before the window and the Reds are confident they will secure the signing.
The plan is to offer Groningen a pre-season friendly and allow former Groningen forward, and now Liverpool striker, Luis Suarez a chance to return to the Euroborg Stadium. Suarez’s Uruguayan connections could also help the Reds land Texeira, but if that bid fails, Dalglish is also interested in FC Twente striker Luuk De Jong. The 21 year old has stated his intentions to stay at Twente until at least the summer, but has admitted that any interest from the Premier League would need some serious consideration.
