Liverpool owners duped into Downing signing

It has emerged today that the Liverpool owners John Henry and Tom Werner parted with £20m for winger Stewart Downing in the summer upon viewing a Youtube video of the then Aston Villa man placing five footballs into five dustbins each from 30 yards.

However, they have since found out that the video was in fact fake, and part of a viral campaign aimed at Aston Villa supporters. It is not the first video of its kind Villa have produced with former players Ashley Young, James Milner and John Carew all having featured in similar footage.

The Birmingham Mail reports Chairman Werner as saying: “There was some footage of Stewart where he was, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it was brilliant. John and I said: ‘Oh my God, this player is brilliant, we’ve got to figure out a way to make a deal with him’.”
