Liverpool target Barcelona defender

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal is being watched by Liverpool as his contract at the Nou Camp draws to a close, according to the Metro.

The French international’s deal expires at the end of the season and Abidal is now entitled to speak to other clubs about a summer move. Barcelona have offered him a two year contract extension, but with a number of major clubs interested, Abidal has asked for time to think about his future. AC Milan have confirmed they are ready to offer the 32 year old a three year deal, but there is also interest from Liverpool and Manchester City. The Reds have made Abidal aware they are keen to sign him, but have not made a formal offer.

Abidal prefers to play at left back, where Liverpool just signed Jose Enrique in the summer, but the chance to sign an experienced international is an attractive prospect. Abidal can play at centre half also and Liverpool would be delighted to sign the 32 year old. Dalglish has been signing young players of late, but the chance to sign a Champions League winner is something that excites the Scotsman.

Liverpool are ready to offer Abidal a two year deal on the same wages he receives at Barcelona. The Reds defence has been solid so far this season and they hold one of the best defences in the Premier League. Experienced Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has not got a look in since his return from injury, so it is interesting to see where Abidal would fit with the Reds.
