Man United closing in on Welbeck deal

Danny Welbeck is expected to sign a new contract at Old Trafford with Manchester United officials confident the deal will be done before the summer, The Manchester Evening News reports. Welbeck has been in great form this season and hit the winner against Arsenal in a 2-1 victory on Sunday.

The England international has a contract until 2013 with United, but is looking to increase his salary in line with some of the other England players in the squad. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are said to earn more than Welbeck at Old Trafford and the 21 year old is looking to move onto level terms with his teammates. Reports last week suggested that Welbeck and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had different views over the new deal, but both parties laughed off the difficulties.

Welbeck is expected to sign a five year deal with the club and United want the deal done before the England striker jets off to Poland and Ukraine for the European Championships. With nine goals to his name already this season, the 21 year old is a shoo-in for a place on Fabio Capello’s squad list and United do not want to leave his future undecided whilst Welbeck is with England.

United are finding the striker easier to negotiate with than their other two young prospects Ravel Morrison and Paul Pogba. Reports of Morrison’s ambition to earn 30k a week, double his current salary, have been dismissed by the player, but United may look to sell the player if he does not conform to their demands. Pogba is out of contract in June and despite United’s willingness to get him to sign, the French midfielder is looking at other options. Italian side Juventus have declared their interest in Pogba, as well as Premier League leaders Manchester City.
