Man Utd fight rivals for Benfica winger

Manchester United are embroiled in a battle with Manchester City for Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan, according to Metro.

Gaitan, 23, has drawn plaudits for his performances for the Portuguese club this season, with one goal and nine assists to his name in eighteen appearances. Five of those assists have come in the Champions League, and with United’s midfield on occasion missing a creative spark this season, Gaitan is seen by Ferguson as an ideal signing.

A factor that could prove an obstacle to any transfer is the £38 million buy out clause in Gaitan’s Benfica contract. The contract runs until 2016, meaning that the club are also unlikely to be tempted to sell. Manchester City have also been linked in the media with a move, but Gaitan’s agent Jose Irribaran was coy on the chances of a switch.

“Gaitan’s goal is to play well for Benfica and be a champion at the club, where he is very happy,” he said. “I do not know if there is interest, but any team in the world would be like to have Gaitan.”
