Man Utd injury worries ahead of City FA Cup clash

Manchester United will be without Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans for Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie against Manchester City, manutd.com confirms.

Smalling is still suffered from tonsillitis and Evans has still got the calf injury picked up in the Boxing Day win over Wigan at Old Trafford. United’s defensive woes have started to become less worrying with the return of Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jones against Newcastle. Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping that two successive defeats against Blackburn and Newcastle will be corrected against Manchester City and is ready for the challenge.

City are unbeaten at the Etihad Stadium this season and have scored plenty of goals, which will worry United fans who have seen their side concede six in their last two. United will be hopeful of victory and a win at the Etihad Stadium could see a huge confidence boost in their chase for their 20th league crown.

Ferguson said: ‘We don’t have any changes. Fortunately we had no injuries on Wednesday, so we’ll have the same squad for Sunday. There’s no progress really to report. Chris Smalling is the one I’d love to get back, but he’s got a really bad bout of tonsillitis. But there are enough experienced players in the squad to cope with a really difficult tie on Sunday.’
