New Chelsea defender Gary Cahill believes that his move to Stamford Bridge can only benefit his chances of a start for England at the European Championships, Press
The 26 year old trained with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday morning after completing a £7m deal from Bolton. Cahill already knows England international defenders John Terry and Ashley Cole and is keen to strike up a partnership to impress England boss Fabio Capello. Cahill have seven international caps to his name and is hoping for more this summer, if he can impress for the rest of the season at Stamford Bridge.
The England international said: ‘I am sure that the England manager is happy that there is a possibility we could be playing together, but you have to be respectful of the fact that I have to earn my position in this team by working hard in training. Coming to a club like Chelsea, there are top-class, international players all the way through the squad, so there is going to be strong competition and it is not going to be easy. I just hope when I get my chance, I take it’.
Cahill has also thanked Blues captain John Terry for helping him settle into international football and believes that it made his job a lot easier to play alongside the England captain. The former Bolton defender also knows Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge from the striker’s loan spell at the Reebok Stadium and will be looking to settle in before potentially making his debut this weekend against newly promoted Norwich City.
