Harry Redknapp has dismissed suggestions that he would swap midfielder Luka Modric for Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, Sky
The Tottenham boss has had to fend off interest from the Blues all season long after they made three unsuccessful bids for the Croatian in the summer. Redknapp wants Modric to remain at Spurs for the rest of his career and is prepared to fight tooth and nail to keep the 26 year old at White Hart Lane. Modric will be impressed with Tottenham’s form and the North Londoners are chasing league leaders Manchester City for the title.
Reports had suggested that Redknapp’s search for a top class striker would end with the move for Torres, but he would have to swap Modric. Spurs have moved quickly to play down any talk of a move for Torres and Redknapp is keen to keep Modric at White Hart Lane. The Croatian signed a long-term deal last summer, but Redknapp is ready to sign a new deal for Modric.
Redknapp said: ‘I think Torres is starting to look the player that we all know he can be, the player he was at Liverpool – he is a top player, no doubt about it. But there is no way he is coming to Tottenham and no swap deal is in the offing for Modric. I think they will get the best out of him. I don’t know where they are, but hopefully the chairman will come to agreement and he ( Modric) signs a new contract. He has got a long contract anyway’.
