Wayne Rooney has accepted a fine for the striker’s training ground performance following a Boxing Day night out, BBC
Rooney went for a meal with teammates Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson, along with their partners, following the club’s 5-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford. There was no suggestion that the players misbehaved or drank too much, but Sir Alex Ferguson was disappointed with the way they performed in training the next day. Rooney was fined one week’s wages and left out of United’s defeat to Blackburn on Saturday.
Evans and Gibson were also fined and left out of the Blackburn squad. Rooney’s problem for missing the Blackburn game was deemed as a few niggling injuries, but the England international is keen to draw a line under what has happened and move on. He is expected to play against Newcastle at the Sports Direct Arena on Wednesday.
A Manchester United source told the BBC that the matter was now considered closed and the players would be back in the side. Rooney, Evans and Gibson were made to come into training last Wednesday, a designated day off, and train alone. The source said: ‘We move on and there is no ongoing feud’.
