Rooney to make return against Newcastle

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that striker Wayne Rooney will be back in contention for Wednesday’s game against Newcastle, Sky Sports reports.

Rooney did not play a part in the New Year’s Eve defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford after he was dropped following a night out on Boxing Day. The England international went out with Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson, as well as their partners, following the Boxing Day win against Wigan at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson was not pleased with the way Rooney was in training the next day and ordered Rooney, along with the two others, into training on their allotted day off.

United need to regain focus following their loss to Rovers at home and face Newcastle at the Sports Direct Arena. Neither the club or Wayne Rooney’s representatives have elaborated on the matter and Ferguson has confirmed that his striker will be back against the Magpies. Ferguson also confirmed that the club are trying to get Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs back.

The United boss, who turned 70 on New Year’s Eve, said: ‘We’re trying hard to get Rio Ferdinand for (Wednesday) and Ryan Giggs, which would make a good difference for us. Wayne Rooney will be available of course. We had a few training sessions, which he missed. You’ve got to be fit to play in this league, you can’t miss training sessions’.
