Spearing eyes Carling Cup for Liverpool revenge over Man City

Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing insists his side will face Manchester City in the Carling Cup next week holding a desire to amend their defeat last night, liverpoolfc.tv reports.

The Reds were beaten 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium against the league leaders and will face City at the Etihad Stadium once again in the semi-final first leg. Spearing believes that the goals Liverpool conceded could have been prevented and felt the scoreline was harsh on Kenny Dalglish’s side. Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina made a mistake for the City first goal and a contentious penalty was awarded against the Reds for City’s third goal.

Spearing said: ‘The goals we conceded were our own fault and we could have done better to prevent them. I thought as a team we did quite well overall. We used the ball well at times and just some lapses in concentration cost us the game. Sometimes it is the small details which can cost you in these games. We know what we have to do better when we come back here next week in the Carling Cup and we will be better’.

Liverpool now move on to Friday’s fixture with League One side Oldham in the FA Cup and Spearing is hoping to avoid a cup upset against the Latics. Dalglish is expecting to shake up his side and Spearing may keep his place in the Reds midfield.
