Van Persie motivated to beat Manchester United following early season drubbing

Arsenal captain Robin van Persie insists that he and his teammates are extremely focused and ready to take on Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium this weekend, reports. The Gunners suffered an 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford earlier in the season, which was the largest defeat in Arsene Wenger’s 15 year reign.

The Dutchman lined up against United in that game and saw his inexperienced, injury-hit Arsenal duly punished by the excellent Premier League champions. Van Persie admits in his captain notes for the matchday programme that he is hungry to perform against United and believes his Arsenal teammates have the same motivation. The Gunners welcome United to North London knowing that a win will close the gap between them and the second placed United.

Van Persie said: ‘What happened against Manchester United at Old Trafford is a motivation, for sure. I’d never lost a match 8-2 before so I’m hungry to put that right, as is the entire team. Everyone has been looking really sharp in training this week, so we’re ready for the game and feeling positive about it. We know exactly what we’re in for – Manchester United are great competitors who often manage to nick a game even if they seem to be struggling.’

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also stated that the game between the two sides is still one of the biggest in the world, despite the emergence of Manchester City. The Gunners against United is always a hotly-anticipated fixture and this weekend is no different, due to the fact that a United victory leaves Arsenal 15 points behind them and surely out of the title race.
