Vermaelen set for Arsenal return against Man Utd

Thomas Vermaelen is set to make his return from injury to face reigning Premier League champions Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium next Sunday, The Mirror reports.

The Belgian has been sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury picked up against QPR last month, but is close to fitness and could have played against Swansea today. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger decided it was too risky to put Vermaelen in at the Liberty Stadium and is confident he will be 100% ready to face United when the two sides face each other next weekend.

Vermaelen had been filling in at left back due to the defensive injuries the club had faced, but should return to central defence against the Premier League champions. United mauled Arsenal 8-2 earlier in the season and the Gunners will be eager to erase that nightmare from their memory. The Belgian international has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers since his move from Ajax and has become a fans favourite.

The defender will not be partnered with Sebastian Squillaci against Swansea, as the French international is being lined up for a return to Monaco. Squillaci has not started one Premier League game this season and has only made five appearances in all competitions. The 31 year old spend six seasons with Monaco between 2000 and 2006 and Wenger is looking to sell a player who has failed to impress since his move from Sevilla to Arsenal in 2010.
