Villas-Boas rules out signing cup-tied players

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has ruled out any potential attempts to sign Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker Willian this month, due to the fact he would be ineligible to compete for Chelsea in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Having represented Shakhtar in the competition already this season he is now cup tied.

Speaking on Goal.com, Villas-Boas outlined his reasoning: “Willian is a very interesting player but he is cup-tied in the Champions League and I don’t think we should go for players who cannot be involved in all the competitions. If a good opportunity arises we could study it but at the moment we are very satisfied.”

Chelsea were also one of a number of Premier League and European clubs linked with Lille forward Eden Hazard, but Villas-Boas has effectively ruled out signing the Belgian in January as he has also appeared in the Champions League already this season for the French champions.
