Walcott admits he needs to score more

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has admitted that he needs to get himself higher up on the goalscoring charts at the Emirates Stadium in 2012, arsenal.com reports.

The England international has emerged as the creator of Arsenal’s chances in recent times and has helped Robin van Persie become one of the Premier League’s top goalscorers. Van Persie praised the work of Walcott, who set up a sizeable chunk of the Arsenal captain’s 35 goals in 2011. Walcott only added eight goals for himself however and is looking to increase that tally considerably in 2012.

Walcott said: ‘I had quite a good scoring year in 2011 with a lot of assists, which I’m happy with. This season, I think I need to get in among the goals a bit more maybe – I only have four. But I’m happy if the team’s winning and I’m getting assists for the main man up front. I’m doing my job and you have to be effective going forward. That’s what I’ve been doing so far’.

Arsenal are currently fifth in the table and Walcott has also made a New Year’s resolution of pushing into the top four. The Arsenal forward also wants the Gunners to end their six season wait for a trophy by challenging in the three up for grabs. The Gunners face Leeds United in the FA Cup this weekend.
