Agger injury worry for Liverpool

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has suffered a suspected broken rib during the Carling Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, Sky Sports reports.

The Danish international was substituted in the 86th minute and ultimately missed the club’s penalty shoot-out victory over Cardiff City. Reds boss Kenny Dalglish confirmed that Agger was set to have an assessment when he returns to the club’s Melwood training ground. Agger has already missed part of the season with a broken rib and his absence would be a setback for Liverpool as they look to fight for their fourth place spot.

Dalglish will be hopeful that Agger can return quickly to maintain his partnership with Martin Skrtel, but confirmed that the Dane was suffering. The Scotsman told the club’s official website: ‘I think Daniel has a broken rib’.

The Liverpool boss still has experienced defender Jamie Carragher and young Uruguayan Sebastian Coates to rely on if Agger’s problem is serious. Carragher could be back into the starting line-up ahead of next weekend’s meeting with top-four rivals Arsenal at Anfield after coming off the bench in the cup final. The Reds are in good form following their Carling Cup victory and 6-1 victory against Brighton in the FA Cup fifth round.
