Ajax defender puts Tottenham on alert

Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted his desire to play in the Premier League, and put Tottenham on alert by describing them as an ‘amazing club’, according to Goal.com.

Vertonghen starred in Ajax’s 2-1 win over Manchester United in the Europa League last week – a win which was not enough to see them through after a 2-0 defeat in the first leg. Harry Redknapp was shown alongside Roberto Mancini in the stands during Channel 5’s coverage of the match, and there was speculation he was there to run his eye over the Belgian defender. Vertonghen plays as a central defender, but can also play as a defensive midfielder. He has amassed 139 appearances for Ajax, and 35 for the Belgian national team.

The 24-year-old’s contract at Ajax expires in June 2013, and has added fuel to the fire of speculation by stating his intent to play in the Premier League. Speaking to Goal.com, he said, “To play for a team in the Premier League would be amazing and that’s what I’m going for. I think Tottenham are an amazing club and you can see how well they’re doing this season. They are in the top three in England and that’s where I want to play.”
