The Dutchman has delayed contract talks until the summer, but when they resume, Arsenal have an offer prepared to try and lure Van Persie to stay. Arsenal’s offer is expected to include a signing-on fee of around £5 million and the deal would be a club record for a player contract.
Gunners chiefs are aware that the club’s on-field prospects are what will attract Van Persie, who has scored 22 goals in the league this season. Wenger recognises that the club need redevelopment after last summer’s departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, which has begun with the loan move to Zenit for winger Andrei Arshavin.
Wenger said: “I believe there was a rupture in the building of our team. Last year, we were very close to the top, but then there was a rupture losing Fabregas, Nasri and Jack Wilshere (through injury). We could compete with anybody in Europe with that midfield”.
