Barcelona dismiss links with Arsenal striker Van Persie

Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu has played down claims the club have contacted Arsenal over the signing of striker Robin van Persie, ESPN reports. The Dutch forward has still not signed a new deal at the Emirates Stadium and has revealed he will only discuss in the summer.

Van Persie’s form this season has been sensational and he has now scored 22 goals in 24 Premier League games for the Gunners. Arsenal are still in the dark over whether Van Persie wants to stay at the Emirates Stadium and it is reported he will decide whether the club reach the Champions League this season. Van Persie’s contract expires in 2013 and Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood is desperate to tie the striker down to a longer deal.

Barcelona pinched Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas last summer and are eager to sign Van Persie this summer, but Bartomeu insists they have not made contact yet. The Spanish and European champions have struggled this season and boss Pep Guardiola is interested in signing the 27 year old for his goalscoring prowess.

Bartomeu said: ‘Nothing exists with RVP. It’s rumours that appear in the papers. We’ve not contacted Arsenal, nor his agent. Our focus is now on La Liga and Copa del Rey. It’s necessary to be focused on the task at hand and not be distracted by the transfer market.’
