Cole set to remain at Chelsea

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole will stay at Stamford Bridge, due to the intervention of Blues owner Roman Abramovich who wants him to stay, The Mirror reports.

The England international was dropped from the starting line-up for last Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Napoli and there had been reports of Cole leaving the club. Chelsea owner Abramovich has stepped in to defuse the situation between Cole and Villas-Boas and wants the 31 year old to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Cole started Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Bolton and was watched by Abramovich, who was delighted that the club got back to winning ways. The England international is entering the final years of his career, but remains one of the best left-backs in the world and Chelsea want to hold onto him. There have been no suggestions that Cole is for sale, but any would alert Barcelona and Real Madrid who are interested in Cole.

Porto defender Alvaro Pereira had been earmarked as a potential replacement for Cole this summer, but Villas-Boas has reconciled with the 31 year old and expects to hold onto him for the near future. Pereira could be seen as a long-term replacement, but the club have England under 21 international Ryan Bertrand as an under-study to Cole.
