Egyptian test for Spanish Olympic team

The Spanish Olympic football team begins its journey on the road to London with a friendly against Egypt in the Cantabrian municipality of Torrelavega on Tuesday night.

Eight months after earning qualification for the Olympic Games with victory in the European Under-21 Championship in Denmark, Luis Milla’s team face a combined Egyptian side that has also qualified for the event thanks to finishing third in the African Under-23 tournament last December.

The countries have faced each other before in the Olympics when they met at the Barcelona ’92 games, Spain winning 2-0 at the Mestalla before going on to claim the gold medal under former Real Madrid defender Vicente Miera.

For this first warm-up game Milla has selected 21 players, the most notable inclusion being that of Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper Joel Robles who has been drafted in due to an injury doubt over David de Gea. The Manchester United man, however, has still joined up with the squad, as is the case with Benfica striker Rodrigo Moreno who has also arrived suffering from an injury.
