Smith, who was known as the Anfield Iron, is putting his prized collection up for auction with Bonhams on February 22nd in the Sporting Memorabilia sale. The collection includes league title, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and European Cup winners’ medals, as well as a full England international cap, a record five Charity Shields and 20 shirts.
The 66 year old told the Liverpool Echo: ‘I had a wonderful career, but the memories I’ve got are more important to me than the medals and the shirts. I’m getting old and the money is more of use to me now than the medals. This is about me putting my family first’.
Smith’s collection is expected to generate a figure in the region of £120,000, as all sorts of Liverpool fans look to get a medal or shirt that one of their heroes collected. The former Reds defender was known for his tough, uncompromising style on a football field and made 638 appearances in a 15 year career at Anfield.
