Luiz insists Chelsea still have good quality

Chelsea defender David Luiz concedes that they have a difficult task in challenging for the Premier League title, but wants them to show the quality that remains in the Blues squad, chelseafc.com reports. The Blues are 12 points away from today’s opponents Manchester United, but have a good recent league record against the Premier League champions.

The Blues have not lost against United in the league since 2004 and in last season’s fixture, Luiz scored his first Chelsea goal in a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. This season has seen new manager Andre Villas-Boas arrive at Stamford Bridge and whilst the club’s fortunes have changed, Luiz has been given a more regular role in the side ahead of January signing Gary Cahill. The former Benfica defender could start against United and is determined to show, along with the rest of his teammates, that Chelsea are still a good side.

Luiz said: ‘From last season to this season things have changed, both teams have new players and squads, some things have not gone so well for us but we have to keep working hard and doing what we have been. We have not been getting the luck, so we have to keep working hard. Manchester United have great players all over the pitch, they’re a world-class team, but Chelsea are too and Sunday will be an excellent game because of this.’

The Brazilian international revealed that he watches United a lot and knows the strengths of the forward line at Old Trafford, so is hoping to deal with them in West London. Chelsea scraped a 1-1 draw with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium in midweek and are without John Terry and Ashley Cole in defence for the game against United. Luiz is expected to partner Cahill at centre half and will have to be on-form to deal with an in-form Danny Welbeck.
