Spearing hails strength in depth at Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing has commended the squad at Anfield and insists that they have enough to challenge for the top four this season, Liverpool Echo reports. The Reds did not buy a player in January and their only business was the release of young goalkeeper Martin Hansen to Viborg in Denmark.

Spearing believes that there was no need for Dalglish to do business and a team without Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Jamie Carragher and Stewart Downing beat Wolves 3-0 on Tuesday. The Reds sit in sixth place, just four points away from Chelsea, and could be further advanced if they had not drawn so many home games. Their cup pedigree has been heightened by reaching the Carling Cup final and the fifth round of the FA Cup and Spearing is looking forward to the rest of the season with the strong Liverpool squad.

The 23 year old said: ‘The squad we have here is a massive squad. All the players are capable of coming in at any point and proving exactly what we’re all about. That was shown at Wolves, where even without some of our big players, we still put on a really good performance. We can all play our own part in helping the team win games.’

Spearing will be hoping to feature in the league game this Monday when the Reds face high-flying Tottenham at Anfield. A win for Liverpool would move them to within eight points of third-placed Spurs and the midfielder wants his side to keep pushing for the Champions League.
