Tactic Talk – Tottenham continue to threaten from all angles

Tottenham Hotspur continued their impressive campaign with an emphatic 5-0 win over Newcastle United at White Hart Lane. In a season full of dominant performances, Spurs again showed the form that has seen them among the contenders for the Premier League title, in a superb attacking display that saw four different players on the scoresheet as Harry Redknapp’s side secured the three points in style.

Facing a tough task against a Newcastle side exceeding expectations under Alan Pardew, Spurs looked to dominate from kick-off, opening the scoring after just four minutes, from one of the less likely sources in the home side, with left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto latching onto Emmanuel Adebayor’s low cross, the first of four assists for the Togolese striker, to put Spurs in front.

Spurs would double their advantage just two minutes later, with deadline day signing Louis Saha netting his first strike for the club, again capitalising on Adebayor’s centre to fire home past Tim Krul. To further endear himself to fans of his new club, Saha would double his tally, to complete a blistering spell, giving Adebayor a third assist, knocking down for the Frenchman to drill home his second and Spurs’ third after just 20 minutes.

With Tottenham’s new look front line off to a sensational start, the depth of talent in the Spurs midfield also became apparent, with Niko Kranjcar breaking from midfield to slot home, after Adebayor reacted first to his saved initial shot, before providing for the Croatian midfielder to give the hosts a four-goal advantage at the break.

Adding a fifth after the break, Adebayor finally got himself on the score sheet, neatly volleying home from close range. Taking a knock in the process, the forward, on-loan from Manchester City, capped a sensational performance with a goal, having been central to every goal in the match. Turning provider on four occasions before finding the net himself, Adebayor’s performance would be pivotal, as his team-mates flourished around him, with goals from midfield and defence in additions to the three goals scored by the starting pair in attack, Tottenham continue to show a growing maturity among a group of players, many of whom chasing their first major honours in English football.

Although times ahead may appear challenging for Tottenham, with speculation surrounding the future of manager Redknapp, further challenges appear likely on the field, with Spurs looking like a side capable for challenging for the title, as well as a second Champions League campaign, Redknapp’s side boast numerous attacking threats from all areas of his side. With a new signing also making an immediate impact, Spurs may yet have a key input into the conclusion of this season’s Premier League.
