Arsenal forward Gervinho has praised the inspirational contribution that captain Robin Van Persie makes to the team and stated the importance of the Gunners retaining the services of the Dutchman, according to ESPN.
“Robin is a player that pushes his team-mates to work more and do more during a match. It is a dream to play with him. He is the captain, the leader of the group, there is no doubt. I could see it from my very first day at the club,” said Gervinho, who crucially missed from 12 yards in Ivory Coast’s 8-7 penalty shoot-out defeat to Zambia in the final of the African Cup of Nations on Sunday.
Gervinho also believes that the mere presence of Van Persie, whom he hopes Arsenal do all they can to keep at the Emirates, gives the Gunners the upper hand over opponents. “I believe when our adversaries see Robin in the team, it is a huge psychological blow.”
Following his exploits in Equatorial New Guinea and Gabon, Gervinho will not be involved in the first leg of Arsenal’s Last 16 Champions League tie against AC Milan this evening but is set to return to the Gunners fold next week.
