Villas-Boas needs more time insists Grant

Andre Villas-Boas has been backed to succeed at Chelsea as long as owner Roman Abramovich gives him time, according to former Blues boss Avram Grant.

Grant spent a season at Stamford Bridge and managed to finish second in the Premier League, as well as losing finalists in the Champions League. Abramovich dismissed the Israelian at the end of the 2007/08 season and many have reported that Villas-Boas is under increasing pressure at the Blues. Chelsea are in fourth place and 14 points behind league leaders Manchester City, which is not a position they are expected to be.

Abramovich has been spotted at the club’s Cobham training ground to rule the roost over Villas-Boas’ work and Grant is hopeful the former Porto boss stays in West London. Grant performed well for Chelsea and believes that Villas-Boas has to handle things both on and off field, because the Blues are not just a football club.

The current Partizan Belgrade manager said: ‘When you sign a young coach, you have to give him some time. He will do good things if he is given time to show what he knows. One of the things I learned at Chelsea is that you have to handle things that go on off the park. Villas-Boas is a very nice guy and did good things at Porto, but he needs time’.
