Wenger describes Arsenal defeat as a ‘disaster’

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that his side are all but eliminated from the Champions League after a disastrous 4-0 defeat to Italian champions AC Milan, BBC Sport reports.

The Gunners were punished for mistakes they made and Wenger’s side are staring at an impossible task of qualifying into the quarter-finals. Arsenal suffered their biggest defeat in Europe and will have to break the record of no team recovering from a 4-0 deficit to go through. Wenger admits that it was the worst performance in Europe he has seen from an Arsenal side and was stunned at what happened.

‘We don’t live in a dream world. There is maybe a 2% or 5% chance statistically, but realistically we are out of this competition. We made mistake after mistake and we were punished. It was shocking to see how we were beaten everywhere. It was our worst performance in Europe by far. There was not one moment in the 90 minutes we were really in the game, and it was always the same problem, balls over the top and we were well beaten’, Wenger said.

An FA Cup tie with Sunderland awaits the Gunners on Saturday and Wenger insists that his side have the opportunity to show their character and mental strength at the Stadium of Light. Arsenal face the return leg at the Emirates Stadium on March 6th, where they will have to perform a minor miracle to get through.
