Fellow Premier League side Newcastle are also interested in the 24 year old, who has confirmed he will not sign a new deal with the Dutch side. Vertonghen is valued at £10m, but the Mirror report reveals Vertonghen made a secret trip to London on Tuesday to watch Arsenal’s 3-0 win over AC Milan in the Champions League.
Gunners defender Thomas Vermaelen is an international team-mate of Vertonghen, which could convince the Ajax centre-back of a move to the Premier League. Vertonghen has just one year left on his contract in Amsterdam and has made it clear to Ajax officials that he won’t sign a new deal. The 24 year old’s versatility will attract Wenger and the move should be made in the summer, which will spark a summer of redevelopment at the Emirates Stadium. Wenger is looking towards Germany in an attempt to sign Lukas Podolski from Cologne and Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund.
Vertonghen said: “I am still under contract until June 2012, but I do not intend to extend it. I hope to continue my career at a good Premier League club where I can stay for many seasons.”
