Arsenal planning summer clear out of fringe players

Arsenal will sell or release more than half a dozen players in an effort to save more than £20m in wages, ESPN has revealed.

Players such as Andrei Arshavin, currently on loan at Zenit St Petersburg, strikers Marouane Chamakh, Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela and Sebastien Squillaci will be free to leave, as will Brazilian midfielder Denilson, who has been on loan with Sao Paulo since July, and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, whose expiring contract will not be renewed.

The report adds that Arsenal hope to save £23m per season by letting the players leave, and comes after Arsenal’s wage bill rose by £20m despite the high-profile departures of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy to Manchester City. Arsene Wenger is also keen to extend the contract of captain Robin van Persie with a deal worth £120,000 per week reportedly on the table, a figure ESPN confirm would break Arsenal’s existing wage structure.
