Arsenal ready to gamble on van Persie future

The Daily Telegraph have reported that Arsenal are willing to risk letting striker Robin van Persie leave for free when his contract expires in 2013 rather than sell him this summer.

The newspaper adds that the Gunners are hopeful of tying van Persie down to a new four-year deal once the season is over, but even if the Dutch international rejects the offer, he will not be allowed to leave until his contract is up.

Parallels have been drawn between van Persie’s situation and that of Samir Nasri, the French midfielder now at Manchester City having left Arsenal last summer, when Arsene Wenger decided to cash in on the player whose contract had only a year to run.

Van Persie was named captain of Arsenal last summer after former skipper Cesc Fabregas joined Barcelona, and the forward has so far netted 32 goals in 37 games for the North London side this season.
