Chelsea evoke spirit of Mourinho in Benfica win

Chelsea’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Benfica had the hallmarks of a Jose Mourinho performance, the Belfast Telegraph has claimed.

A Salomon Kalou goal gave Roberto Di Matteo victory at the Stadium of Light but the newspaper reported that the triumph was in the spirit of Chelsea’s most successful manager, saying: “…Chelsea emerged with the kind of win that evoked the best moments of Jose Mourinho’s era.

The defeat of Benfica was Di Matteo’s fifth win as interim Chelsea manager in his seven games in charge. The only two occasions in which Di Matteo has not guided his side to victory are a 2-1 against Manchester City at the Premier League title chasers Etihad Stadium home, and a 0-0 draw with rivals for Champions League qualification Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

Di Matteo has overseen Chelsea’s progression to the FA Cup semi-finals, where they face Spurs on April 15, as well as victories over Napoli in the Champions League and Stoke City in the Premier League.
