Chelsea old guard still set for exit despite Champions League progression

The Sun has reported that Chelsea’s senior players are still being lined-up for a clear out in the summer despite taking the side past Napoli and into the Champions League quarter-finals.

Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba and captain John Terry are reportedly amongst the names who will be invited to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, despite the latter pair scoring vital goals to keep Chelsea in Europe and book a meeting with Benfica in the next stage of the Champions League.

The Sun adds that rather than soothing the anger of chairman Roman Abramovich, the second-leg victory over Napoli has only increased his bad temper, with the Russian now upset that the players failed to raise their game to that level when Andre Villas-Boas was in charge. Interim manager Roberto Di Matteo will also still be dispensed with despite an upturn in the club’s form.

Since replacing Villas-Boas with Di Matteo Chelsea have gone three games unbeaten, reaching the next round of the FA Cup with a victory over Birmingham City, squeezing past 10-man Stoke City in the Premier League and eliminating Napoli from the Champions League.
