Sebastian Coates’ selection as part of the Liverpool backline against Sunderland was a vote of confidence in the Uruguayan defender, according to the Liverpool
Coates was picked ahead of Reds stalwart Jamie Carragher to partner Martin Skrtel in the centre of the Liverpool defence, and while the newspaper adds that Carragher is likely to return when Liverpool host Everton on Tuesday evening, Coates’ appearance against the Black Cats is an example of how highly rated he is at Anfield.
The 21-year-old Coates moved to Merseyside last summer from Nacional of Uruguay. Capped seven times by the national side Coates was part of the squad that competed at last year’s Copa America and was named Best Young Player in the tournament.
This season Coates has made seven appearances for Liverpool, starting three times in the League Cup against Brighton and Hove Albion, Stoke City and Chelsea and making two Premier League appearances as part of the first XI.
