Di Matteo confident Chelsea can reach Champions League

Roberto Di Matteo has told the BBC that he is confident Chelsea can finish in the top four of the Premier League and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Di Matteo told the broadcaster: “Are we confident of making the Champions League? Absolutely. We still believe and we still have confidence we can make it.” The interim Chelsea manager was speaking after his side suffered their first defeat under his stewardship, losing 2-1 to Manchester City having taken the lead through Gary Cahill on the hour mark.

At the same time Chelsea were playing Man City their rivals for Champions League qualification were also in action, Arsenal defeating Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park through a Thomas Vermaelen goal and Tottenham Hotspur drawing 1-1 with Stoke City at White Hart Lane, Rafael van der Vaart equalising for Spurs after Cameron Jerome put the Potters in front.

The midweek results leave Arsenal in third place, a point clear of Spurs and six ahead of Chelsea, while Tottenham have a five point advantage over Chelsea with the sides set to meet at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
